I wrote my sister a letter a couple of months back and I like to share the letter with you guys.
I wanted to help her through some rough patches so I gave her a heartfelt hand-written letter, sharing with her my thoughts on self-love and empowerment.
Now I am sharing parts of this letter, so that girls and women out there know that they are special in unique ways and be empowered to do something for themselves – and never live in the shadows of men.

There has been a slow but gradually growing hype about this particulae skincare ingredient since 2014.
But is this ingredient able to become an all-popular choice just like how the snail products invaded our lives, or become an essential ingredient of an anti-aging line just like fermented ingredients?
To be quite honest, I am not too sure.
But from a guy’s standpoint, this ingredient, known as Tiger Cica – Centella asiatica or the Gotu Kola herb – has a major potential due to all the skin benefits it promises.
But when it comes to skincare, it is pretty much under-rated at the moment. Fortunately, skincare companies are starting to catch on this trend early, and incorporating this underdog ingredient into their lines.
In fact, this ingredient is known as 병풀/호랑이풀 or “byeongpul” in Korea, which means Tiger herb or “disease-treating plant”.
So, what is exactly this Tiger Cica grass?
Let’s first begin with its origins.
According to the legends, a wounded Bengal tiger was said to have rolled in the Centella asiatica or the Gotu Kola leaves with the intent to stimulate wound healing for itself. And that is how the name of the “tiger grass” came about.
The Tiger Cica grass definitely has a longgg history!
With different cultures using it as a medicinal herb for varioud reasons up till this day, I would say that the Tiger Cica ingredient is definitely tried and tested – to the point that it has stood and conquered the test of time!
A research summary from Phytomedicine has also brought up the fact that the ingredient has been subjected to “quite extensive experimental and clinical investigations”, while Indian Journal of Medicine cited gotu kola as a “potential herbal cure-all” in an overview.
“WHAT CAN I SAY? IT IS A SUPER FOOD AND A SUPER HERB.”
Specific plant chemicals called triterpenoid saponins (more specifically asiaticoside, brahmoside, brahminoside, madecassoside and madecassic or madasiatic acid) that have been shown to help heal wounds by boosting antioxidants, increasing the blood supply to the area and strengthening the skin.
In fact in a 2012 study, researchers found that the ingredient extracts inhibited bacterial growth, fueled the growth of new skin cells and increased skin “tensile strength” and resilience after applying concentrate of centella asiatica to the skin of rats with open wounds.
Why should we try Tiger Cica?

Interestingly, I truly feel that the use of Gotu Kola suits and appeals alot to boys/guys/men. For me, I like that it zooms into maintaining that healthy complexion by just healing and regeneratinh, combating skin disorders and defying the effects of time – all at once.
And that it isn’t so focused on getting that beauty glow related to whitening or radiance that most females desire.

So… for skincare, where does that come in?
Last question… Is The Boyish Life just for males?
1. What does it mean to have “Boyish Life”?
Essentially, there are some charmed values when it comes to living a boyish life. And living that life is a lifestyle choice with 4 fundamental values as follows:
2. What is the link between a “Boyish Life” and “Selfcare/Skincare”?
“Taking care of your basic physical and emotional needs should really be the backbone for getting stuff done, but ironically, self care is usually the first thing to go.”
They are right. Many living in modern societies today have clearly what is it like to spare a personal thoughts about oneself or others.
Some may be too involved at work (emotionally and physically), while others blindly follow suit of what others are doing without considering or appropriating those choices in accordance to their own individuality.
BUT life is more than just work. And life is more than just about fitting in. Your life is about you, your aspirations and what makes you happy (recall Boyish values #1: Positivity).
Some may have mistaken selfcare as a reward system, especially when life throws you lemons. But it is not that simple.
Having selfcare, which is fundamentally built on having self-awareness, tells you to take a pause in those situations. It guides you to get a time-out because you need those me-time to think, recharge and regroup – whether is it a couple of minutes or career break.

Selfcare is a lifestyle choice to embrace your individual personhood – be touch with yourself, your emotions and your identity (recall Boyish values #2 : Self-love).
I don’t want to be like those lifestyle+beauty blogger/youtubers who tell you to buy a product because it is good or that it is in trend.
I want to be that friend who tells you about something interesting and meaningful, and let you decide if it is what suits you and what you want, then I would encourage you to do it. And more importantly, embrace it even if everyone else isn’t doing it (recall Boyish values #3 : Boldness).
It is only when only when something sings and resonates with who you really are inside, that’s where true passion is and that’s where you’re truly enjoying and living your life (recall Boyish value #4 : Authenticity)
3. So… for skincare, where does that come in?
Skincare is just what resonates the most with me (@louistylersim) when it comes to self-care.
I actually also advocate having good emotional hygiene (but… lets leave that for another post. But you can check out the following video).
When it comes to selfcare, when I am having a bad day, or a good day actually, I enjoy coming home to have a scrub, or have a face mask to rejuvenate myself or to heal my emotional wounds.
I get even more excited to share the effects of a new product or some skincare techniques I know with people who face similar interests or issues.
So, this means majority of the post here is largely be about skincare and bodycare. But that would not steer the main mission of The Boyish Life that is advocating the values of being Boyish .
In a nutshell, the 4 values are 1) Positivity, 2) Self-love 3) Boldness ; and 4) Authenticity or “Genuineness“.
I hope this has clarified some of the confusion of who and what we are.
4. Last question… Is The Boyish Life just for males?
The answer is no.
Personally, I don’t support gender labelling. While the term “boyish” comes with some baggage of male stereotypes, I think we are at a stage where we are past those age-old expectations of what a female or male should be.
The boyish life hopes to blur the boundaries and create some fluidity of what “boyish” or “girlish” means.
When someone says tells us that we are too “boyish” for a girl or too “girlish” for a boy, and we should be ready to reply them that you’re neither simply because you are yourself – you do what you like and what makes you happy.
So it really doesn’t matter if what your biological gender is, or whatever number represents your age, if this four values resonates with you, or you’re just looking for skincare tips, I hope you keep supporting The Boyish Life. 🙂

I have always been consciously on the look out for something to help manage sudden breakouts. Something that is easily available and ideally should also be dermatologist-recommended.
I have always wanted a staple product that deals with skin issues like spots and acne.
My hypersensitive skin flares up whenever I stay up in the night, or is having less-than-usual intake of water.
(If you’re skin-obsessed like me, you should know how difficult and expensive it is to get products directly from the skin doctor.)

Dr. Lin Skincare
A couple of weeks ago, Dr. Lin Skincare from Beverly Hills sent me a couple of items for me to try out. I actually saw some surprising results the very next day. Read on to find out more.
Now, I am actually seriously considering to include this product as one of my “staple product” and a must get item.
But first, let me share with you more on Dr Lin’s Skincare.
Let’s begin with his story.
The founder, Dr. Michael Lin, has a personally struggled with acne before and has made it his mission to help people attain that clear and healthy skin.
Dr. Lin is now one of America’s leading board certified dermatologists, and has grown his practice across multiple locations within Los Angeles, including the flagship clinic in Beverly Hills.
More importantly, he has launched his very own Acne Clarifying System in various retail stores such (Walmart etc.) – watch his videohere.
Before I begin sharing on my first impressions, I like to take this opportunity to really thank the team at Dr. Lin Skincare. When they first sent me the trial kit, somehow one of the product (the cleanser, actually.) leaked during transition and damped the other items.
I thought maybe they could just send me another cleanser, but they actually sent a full second set! This is amazing customer service and lot of loves and pride for their product. Kudos to the team! 🙂
Essentially, the hero product line is The 2-Step Acne Clarifying System, which contains a Daily Cleanser and Acne Lotion.
My first impressions :
(1) I saw visible results in as little as 24 hours – for both ripe and new spots.
The tiny breakouts on my forehead (all 5 little babies up there) cleared up within 12 hours… what sorcery is this?!
(2) It is actually really easy to use.
I believe it is effective for all skin types as it doesn’t really cause that much dryness.
(3) It is paraben-free (Yay!)

(4) Apparently, it does not only treats the troubled areas like acne.
I saw visible lightening effects on both dark and red pigmentation marks from previous spots/scars.
However, I have two piece of cautionary advice when it comes to using this product:
You may wish to skip using a toner. The product is designed to work better without the drying effects of the toner.
As Dr. Lin’s formula consist of a ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and other natural active botanicals, do remember to keep your skin hydrated by drinking more water or a separate moisturizer!

I was previously back in Korea for my yearly trip, and many were asking me what’s in my shopping haul. I am here to share it with you in this video. Enjoy!
All I can say is everyone should have the luxury of premium movie viewing at least once in their lives.
Watching a movie is a golden opportunity for contemplation – to analyze the movie and simultaneously have deeper conversations with myself.
But due to disappointing experience, I usually shun the idea of going to the movies – which can be a painful process. When you want to catch a newly released movie, you are put into a situation among a village of strangers, and feeling like you’re “held captive”.
There is always a nagging fear that the experience can become unpleasant when the seats are uncomfortable / dirty / narrow / cramped etc.
However, my virgin experience at Gold Class(first time in 20+ years in my life) has awaken that dormant moviegoer in me. Now, I can see myself visiting the theatres more regularly – especially for blockbusters like the recently released “Alien: Covenant”.
3 Great Reasons For a Premium Movie Experience
ONE. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE AMBIENCE.
The theatre can hold a small viewing group of approximately 20 people.
This would mean that you have all the privacy you need and minimal disturbance to your movie experience. (Recall: Unpleasant crying babies & talkative people)
Did I mention that the sound & screen quality is so much better as you are seated close to the screen?
“WATCHING A MOVIE IS A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR CONTEMPLATION.”
TWO. BE COMFORTABLE & RELAXED.
The game-changer for me was essentially how enhanced the experience is – and of course how soft the seats are and leg room is aplenty,
The best part was how the seats could be reclined into a lying position. And a bonus blanket for the added comfort.
Imagine how comfortable and familiar it was – like I was in the comforts of my own room with all the movie-viewing facilities on steroids!
THREE. WINE & DINE WHILE YOU WATCH.
Say no to pop corns, nachos or hotdogs.
The variety of food is pretty good as the menu look like it came from a typical and classy western restaurant.
Also, there is also the hospitable service of the staff, who are always ready to tend to you at the call of a button.
The only bummer was that I kinda felt I was eating in the dark.
What I had was soup and salad, and it was pretty challenging to make out and pick up the ingredients that was in my salad.
(I can’t quite imagine the struggle for those who actually order steak or pasta!)
OVERALL, THIS EXPERIENCE WAS A DELIGHT.
For the luxury of privacy, dining and comfort, I am willing to look beyond the price tag and enjoy my movie in comfort and a peace of mind.
