BEST FORM OF DEFENCE : SUN PROTECTION

2017-10-06-22-18-11

HI GUYS! I am back with a new post as I am receiving a lot of questions on Sun Protection.

(Sorry I have been extremely busy with life, but I promise I will back on track. Do DM me to chase me for content from time to time :P)

Anyway, here goes!

Using sunscreen is a must!

I can’t emphasis enough how much we should be using sunscreen – every day, outdoors and even indoors. Each individual use it for a different reason. I use it more for anti-aging and cosmetics reasons (because I usually get the one with a whiter base).

But in general, it is more commonly used for:

  1. Sun protection from harmful UV rays (redness, peeling etc.)
  2. Prevention of premature aging (lines, wrinkles, age spots etc.)
  3. Lower risk of skin cancer
  4. Evening out skin tone

For guys and girls out there who are not using sunscreen, good news is you’re not too late to start!

Now, here is a fun fact.

Exposure to harmful UV rays triggers a biological UV-meter in your body. And every moment you’re out in the sun, your body tracks the exposure and accumulates the damage. It is only when you start protecting yourself, you allow your body to halt the accumulative process and let it recover from the damage – to some extent.

So, where do we start?

If you look closely on every sunscreen product, there is always some very important information. One, the SPF number (SPF15, SPF30, SPF45 etc.) and the PA strength (PA+, PA++, PA+++ and PA++++).

The SPF number, known as the sun protection factor, is indicative of the protection from the UVB rays. These rays are the one that penetrates only the superficial layer of your skin. To better remember this, associate “B” with burn – or more accurately time taken to be burnt.

UVA UVB sunscreen

The higher the number really means that it would takes a longer period for you to feel the burn from the sun than those who don’t use sunscreen.

(SPF15 means taking 15 times longer than without sunscreen – and the list goes on.)

It is also said that the SPF number is reflective of the amount of harmful rays you are protected from – the higher the number, the higher percentage of harmful rays you are covered and protected from.

Think of it as the forcefield shields you have seen in action movies or marvel comics – where that “protection” is exhaustible and would eventually reach you when the forcefield runs out.

The real thing we all should worry for is to guard against UVA rays.

UVA rays are the rays that penetrate deeper into the thickest layer of your skin known as the dermis.

Over-exposure of UVA rays in the longer term is often related to hyper-aging or known as premature aging) and photo-aging that is wrinkling of the skin. Yes, you are right. “A” for aging.

So essentially, PA is Protection Grade of UVA rays in product terms.

More importantly, the number of plus-es you see on the packaging means the level of Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) that you are protected from. The more pluses, the more protected you are from PPD.

  • PA+ : Having one plus means that the sunscreen provides protection with factor of 2-4 (medium UV radiation).
  • PA++ : Having two pluses shows that the sunscreen provides protection with factor of 4-8.
  • PA+++ : Having three pluses shows that the sunscreen provides protection with factor of above 8-16.
  • And finally for PA++++ is for PDD protection above the level of 16.

Trivia: While 16 is is the new limit, most companies in U.S are actually still using PA+++ as the standard limit instead of adopting the higher limit of PA++++.

What else should I know?

There are also sunscreens out there that are commonly associated with terms “broad-spectrum coverage” or “full-spectrum coverage”, which really just means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

But one thing about this trend is that it does not specify or inform you of the extent of the protection with regards to PPD or UVA protection. Yes, the one that ages you!

The good thing is that we are starting to see that these broad-spectrum products are shifting towards having zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as a key ingredient.

zinc-oxide

Zinc oxide is actually commonly used lately as it sits on top of the skin and blocks out harmful rays, rather than being absorbed into the skin. It is also known to be helpful in preventing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and scarring.

Titanium dioxide, however, is used more commonly for sensitive and redness-prone skin. Click here if you’re interested in how they are different.

Final Takeaways
  1. Using sunscreen is a must – every single day, be it outdoor or indoors.
  2. Look out for PA+ and above, which represents the Protection grade for UVA rays for anti-aging and recovery purposes.
  3. Check out sunscreen with Zinc oxide or Titanium dioxide for added benefits.

I hope all of you like today’s post. And please please please start using sunscreen to protect yourself from the damaging rays of the sun!

THE REAL DEAL, FOREO FOR REAL

Hi everyone! 🙂

But now, I am back with some exciting news!

(I have been on hiatus because I am just too busy at work and if you’re curious of what have I been busy with… stay tuned for the upcoming few posts!)

Many of you have been asking me for skincare advice.  Now, I am ready to reveal one of my biggest secret – the Foreo Luna! (for real. did you get it? :p)

the boyish life - louistylersim - foreo 2

As a skincare addict, I have been an avid follower facial cleaning brushes like the clarisonic brushes and the Prox Advanced Cleansing brush by Olay.

For me, I decided against the clarisonic and went ahead with the Prox as the latter was more affordable.

Especially for guys, it doesn’t make sense to invest so much when there isn’t any make up to remove.

But there was a problem.

I had to replace the brushes every other month… until I decided to swap to the Foreo Luna.

What is the Foreo Luna?

The Foreo Luna is said to :

  1. Harness the anti-bacterial properties of silicone; that is hypoallergenic and soft ;
  2. Uses T-Sonic power pulsations (8000/min) gently against the skin and removes dead cells and unclogs pores for firmer, cleaner complexion ;
  3. Employs lower-frequency pulsations on grooves to reduce signs of age such as fine lines and wrinkles.

LUNA devices were found to remove up to 99.5% of impurities from the skin by unclogging pores of dirt and oil.  And that is absolutely amazing!  Check this video out.

Anyway purchasing the Foreo Luna comes with warranty coverage and free shipping if bought from the site.

Today, there are so many choices when it comes to the Foreo Luna.

My Foreo story

the boyish life - louistylersim foreo 3

I started with the Foreo Go (the smaller light pink Foreo shown on the right) as I wanted something portable for travel.

But after a year, it felt that it was time to “graduate” and go for an upgrade.

But, I decided to get the Luna Mini over the Luna 2 simply because I just couldn’t decide which skin type I was and which one should I take, so I “settled” for the mini.

Just so you know, the Luna 2 has three choices for Combination skin (Blue), Sensitive & normal skin (Pink) and Ultra-sensitive skin (Grey).

A SUMMER SALE!

This is the good news for all!

FOREO is having two online sale till Sep 5, 2017.

“HIDDEN DRAGON, CROUCHING” TIGER CICA HERB

Disclaimer: This post is not a sponsored post. However, it is a prelude to upcoming posts on IT’S SKIN new Tiger Cica line. So stay tuned! 🙂

Men Skincare Grooming Blog The Boyish Life Singapore - Tiger Cica Its Skin

There has been a slow but gradually growing hype about this particulae skincare ingredient since 2014.

But is this ingredient able to become an all-popular choice just like how the snail products invaded our lives, or become an essential ingredient of an anti-aging line just like fermented ingredients?

To be quite honest, I am not too sure.

But from a guy’s standpoint, this ingredient, known as Tiger Cica – Centella asiatica or the Gotu Kola herb – has a major potential due to all the skin benefits it promises.

What can I say?  It is a super food and a super herb.

But when it comes to skincare, it is pretty much under-rated at the moment. Fortunately, skincare companies are starting to catch on this trend early, and incorporating this underdog ingredient into their lines.

Today, we are seeing that many skincare brands that have incorporated Gotu Kola (centella asiatica extract) into their products, catering specifically to acne prone and sensitive skin.  Skincare brand Dr. Jart+ that prides its products to be safe for the most hyper-sensitive of skin has done it with its Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream.

Men Skincare Grooming Blog The Boyish Life Singapore - Madaekasul

In fact, this ingredient is known as 병풀/호랑이풀 or “byeongpul” in Korea, which means Tiger herb or  “disease-treating plant”.

So, what is exactly this Tiger Cica grass?

Let’s first begin with its origins.

According to the legends, a wounded Bengal tiger was said to have rolled in the Centella asiatica or the Gotu Kola leaves with the intent to stimulate wound healing for itself.  And that is how the name of the “tiger grass” came about.

The Tiger Cica grass definitely has a longgg history!

With different cultures using it as a medicinal herb for varioud reasons up till this day, I would say that the Tiger Cica ingredient is definitely tried and tested – to the point that it has stood and conquered the test of time!

Today, this herb is used in Traditional Chinese medicine and Indian Medication extensively.  Some articles out there even went further to highlight its role in enhancing meditative practices as it has shown to help in improving focus and concentration.

So, what is exactly this Tiger Cica grass

Rich in amino acids, beta carotene, fatty acids, and numerous potent phytochemicals, the Centella asiatica extracts have been found to “calm inflammation, speed wound healing, stimulate new cell growth, build collagen, and improve circulation”.

A research summary from Phytomedicine has also brought up the fact that the ingredient has been subjected to “quite extensive experimental and clinical investigations”, while Indian Journal of Medicine cited gotu kola as a “potential herbal cure-all” in an overview.

“WHAT CAN I SAY?  IT IS A SUPER FOOD AND A SUPER HERB.”

Specific plant chemicals called triterpenoid saponins (more specifically asiaticoside, brahmoside, brahminoside, madecassoside and madecassic or madasiatic acid) that have been shown to help heal wounds by boosting antioxidants, increasing the blood supply to the area and strengthening the skin.

In fact in a 2012 study, researchers found that the ingredient extracts inhibited bacterial growth, fueled the growth of new skin cells and increased skin “tensile strength” and resilience after applying concentrate of centella asiatica to the skin of  rats with open wounds.

Why should we try Tiger Cica?

If you are looking for the following effects on your skin, then Tiger Cica is definitely for you.
  1. Anti-Aging
  2. Skin Restructuring (Healing of wounds and scars)
  3. Toning and Tightening

Some articles which focused on how it could actually cure varicose veins highlighted its ability to stimulate the regeneration of peripheral blood vessels, making it one of the best alliances to help those with paler skin.

For me, I am extremely excited about this product! 🙂

As I am growing fairer (for some strange reasons!), I have been noticing some redness at the side of my nose.  I reallt hope this helps in rebalancing the colour of my face.

Cosmetic Applications of the ingredient
  1. Treatment of sun damage
  2. For circulatory enhancement
  3. Speed up healing of damage tissues / Stimulate skin repair
  4. Minimize scarring
  5. Improve the looks of cellulite
  6. Anti-aging (by improving the moisture barrier)
  7. Anti-aging (by providing collagen support)

Lastly, the tiger cica is said to have other benefits beyond just skincare – improving memory and haircare.  In particular, it is helps with hair loss and improves the blood circulation at the scalp.

In Conclusion

I hope this post has helped you to understand the potential skin benefits of Gotu Kola and its related skin care products.
Interestingly, I truly feel that the use of Gotu Kola suits and appeals alot to boys/guys/men.  For me, I like that it zooms into maintaining that healthy complexion by just healing and regeneratinh, combating skin disorders and defying the effects of time – all at once.
And that it isn’t so focused on getting that beauty glow related to whitening or radiance that most females desire.
I absolutely can’t wait to share more about the It’s Skin Tiger Cica line with you in the next post(s)! :p
Till then, see you next time! 🙂 🙂 🙂

SHAVING & GOOD SKIN

Good shaving practice is definitely a very importance aspect to me when it comes to achieving my dream look – clean-cut with crystal clear skin. 🙂

Especially for men, it is important to take good care of the skin – so that skin conditions ranging from dehydrated skin, dullness, acne, and shaving ingrowths can be easily avoided.

I’m sure that is not something you want too. :p

It has been said that men, in particularly, are more prone to these issues as “sebum production is greater in males as compared to females”.

Shaving3

In this post, I want to share with you a proper simple step by step guide for shaving your facial hair so that you can avoid hurting your skin, and get the most out of each experience.

But before we begin, a little disclaimer first, everyone develops his own personal style to achieve a comfortable and effective shave – because of individual skin types, and compatibility with both products and techniques.

7 STEPS TO TREATING YOUR SKIN RIGHT WHEN SHAVING

Shaving

STEP #1 : PREP YOUR SKIN WITH WARM WATER

To prevent damaging the skin too much while trimming, preparation of the skin is definitely necessary!

As warm water softens the hairs, making them easier to cut, you can either take a warm/hot bath, or wet your face with hot (not boiling water!) or warm water.

I definitely recommend the former!

Because showering helps in expanding your follicles and opening the pores – which reduces the tugging of your skin when the blade comes in contact with facial hair.  More importantly, the hot water kills the bacteria from your previous night.

STEP #2 USE THE RIGHT SHAVING CREAM

Shaving cream, on the other hand, provides a protective layer which allows the blade to glide smoothly over your skin.  But, never choose one that contains alcohol because it can dry out your skin.

Shaving4

One, it keep the skin hydrated and exfoliates the skin at the same time.

And if you’re taking a shower before your shave, it helps to ensure that both heat and moisture are locked and retained in the skin with its rich lather.

Two, working in hand with the plumped up follicles from hot water, its lubricating property ensures that the blade glides effortlessly across your skin, resulting in a cleaner cut and a smoother shave.

Tip: Always allow your shaving cream to do its magic by leaving it on  for a couple of minutes before picking up the shaver and “bulldozing” that bear away.

STEP #3 : BE GENTLE WHEN IT COMES TO USING YOUR SHAVER

Try to use razors with as little blades as possible because each blade drags and irritates your skin.  And be gentle.  Do not remove everything in one try.  Go for the technique of reduction versus removal.

STEP #4: ORDER THE DIRECTION OF YOUR SHAVE

Begin by shaving with the grain (along the direction of the hair growth).

Then across the grain (which is perpendicular to where your hair is pointing).

You may want to end it off with shaving against the grain for a more thorough shave.

However, if you wish to do so, do it with caution as shaving against the grain increases the likelihood of getting irritations and ingrown hairs.

“TWO, WORKING IN HAND WITH THE PLUMPED UP FOLILICLES FROM THE HOT WATER, ITS LUBRICATING PROPERTY ENSURES THAT THE BLADE GLIDES EFFORTLESSLY ACROSS YOUR SKIN, RESULTING IN A CLEANER CUT AND A SMOOTHER SHAVE.

STEP #5: RINSE WITH COLD WATER WELL

Not only does this helps in cleaning off the waste in the shaving cream, but more importantly helps in reducing the possibility of any infection.

A refreshing splash of cool water tightens the blood vessels, and eliminates any initial bleeding or irritation caused by those micro-cuts.

STEP #6: PAT YOUR FACE DRY, ALWAYS

At this stage, your skin is in a state of shock.  So, you definitely won’t want to create any additional trauma by injuring it further with a rubbing motion – especially with a rough towel.

Instead, pat it gently with a dry, soft and clean towel. Your skin will definitely thank you in ways you can’t imagine afterwards!

STEP #7: PAMPER YOUR SKIN WITH AFTERCARE

To avoid burns and healing the microcuts, apply an ALCOHOL-FREE aftershave/afterbalm as it help you sooth and re-hydrate your skin –  because shaving scrapes away your natural facial oil.  At the same time, it restores your skin’s PH back to normal.

Aftershave products come in balms, gels, toners, and lotions, and it’s up to you to pick the one that is best for your skin.  As a rule of the thumb, always  avoid those that content alcohol or menthol as it causes irritation and burns.

I usually use a moisturizer. 🙂 And, I would recommend one with vitamin C content to reduce redness and sooth burns.

With that said, I hope you like this post on shaving the right way. If you’re a guy, I hope it provides you with a guide to how to give your skin the tender loving care to keep complications at bay.

And if you’re a girl, I hope you can educate your friends, brother, or boyfriend on proper skincare practices when it comes to shaving. 🙂
